A good amount of snow has been recorded in Badrinath, Kedarnath and Rohtang Pass with Shimla observing the first snowfall of this season during the last 24 hours. The Winter season has tightened its grip with cold wave intensifying in the hilly states. Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh are recording maximums below normal by 6-10 degree Celcius. Uttarakhand too is observing maximums in the lower degrees now.
Due to heavy snowfall, vehicular traffic has been suspended on the 13,050 ft high Rohtang Pass, disrupting all road communication to the tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti since November 24. The higher reaches of Chhitkul village, Pooh, Sangala, Asrang and Kalpa in Kinnaur district have been covered by a thick blanket of snow, with temperatures hitting the sub-zero mark. Dark clouds and subsequent rainfall have reduced the visibility levels in Kufri, Mashorba, Shimla, Narkanda and Kharpather.
According to the data available with Skymet, Qazi Gund and Banihal in Jammu and Kashmir have recorded 57 mm and 39 mm of rainfall respectively in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday.
The reason can be attributed to the Western Disturbance, which has been the fourth active system in a row to give significant rain and snow. Despite the system moving away, it would continue to give moderate to heavy rain and snow in Uttarakhand for another 24 hours. However, activities would start reducing in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh today afternoon onward.
