Since the onset of monsoon, Delhi has not witnessed monsoon-like showers. Similar is the case with Punjab and Haryana. Although, parts of Punjab and Haryana have been receiving intense rain and shower activities, but continuous downpour which is typical during monsoon season remained absent.
Between June 1 and July 16, Delhi is rain deficient by 52%, Haryana by 8% and Punjab is surplus by 5%.
Since the beginning of July, the axis of monsoon trough is oscillating north and south frequently. That was the main reason for the northern plains receiving patchy rains.
Now, monsoon trough will move north and get stabilize for the next 3 to 4 days. Therefore, we expect a marginal increase in rain activity on July 18th over Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana. Between July 19 and 21 there will be a significant increase in rain activities over Punjab and Haryana. Moderate rain with few heavy spells is possible over Punjab and Haryana. Delhi will also get widespread rain and shower activities during this period.
This may be the first prolonged rain spell over northern plains, leading to a drop in temperatures. The weather will become comfortable bringing relief from ongoing sultry weather.
