First good spell of Monsoon rains in Saurashtra brings cheers to farmers

July 23, 2015 1:41 PM |

Rain in SaurashtraSaurashtra was rainfall deficit almost for the entire month of July. And, seems like the Monsoon rains have come just in time. On Wednesday, this region received fairly widespread heavy showers. This short and sweet spell of rain has revived the hopes of farmers in the state, who had virtually halted sowing of seeds.

The cyclonic circulation over Kutch and adjoining South Rajasthan is responsible for bringing rain in Saurashtra during last 24 hours. The system has done its deed; it has replenished the sowed crops and vacated the Saurashtra region. Had the system been persisting over the area, it would have taken a different dimension and caused flooding.

Here’s a look at the rainfall figures in Saurashtra in a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Wednesday:

Rain in Gujarat

The entire state of Gujarat did not receive any good spell after June 25. The depression, which formed over North Arabian Sea, entered coastal areas of Gujarat and brought good showers in the state. By June 25, Monsoon rain in Saurashtra was surplus by 120%. Thereafter, rainfall reduced in the entire state and all the reserved surplus rainfall got consumed. Till July 22, Saurashtra was deficit by 38% of Monsoon rains.

Monsoon forecast for Saurashtra

According to Skymet, rain has reduced over Saurashtra, but remnants of the cyclonic circulation over Gujarat will continue to bring patchy rain in the state. Moreover, several cyclonic circulations are likely to come up over the Bay of Bengal in the coming days. These weather systems will travel across Central India up to Gujarat. Therefore, Monsoon showers are likely to return in Saurashtra after a break of 48 hours. In fact, this part of the country will continue to receive frequent showers till the end of July.
