The seven sisters of Northeast India comprise of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. All these states are of homogeneous terrain including hills, forests, vallies etc. Due to the variability of terrains over all the northeastern states, intensity and spread of rain differ largely.

However, talking especially about the rains, winter season, i.e. January and February usually receive good amount of rains. Meanwhile, this year, these months have been highly rain deficient. Moreover, since the beginning of January, very light rain spells have been seen over the entire Northeast India.

Going back to the weather over northeast India in January, almost all the sub divisions remained deficient to largely deficient. Only Arunachal Pradesh received few good spells but still fell short of normal rain by 38%.

Furthermore, the same weather conditions continued in the beginning of February as well. The first 2 weeks were highly deficient, but in the 3rdweek, Arunachal Pradesh experienced a few decent rainy days. It received the most amount of rainfall as compared to the others with 25.6 mm against the normal of 28.3 mm resulting in a deficiency of a mere 10 percent.

As per weathermen, the winter rains so far from January 1 to February 21 have remained largely deficient over the entire region of Northeast India. Arunachal Pradesh was 24% deficient, Assam and Meghalaya were 76% deficient, whereas Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura observed a deficiency of 82%.

Currently, since last two days the entire region of Northeast India has been receiving good winter showers for the first time since January. Fourth week of February possibly will not be disappointing like the previous ones. But the wet spells will be ending soon, and the month of February may also end on a dry note.
