Earlier than expected, the Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Fani has intensified into Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm over Southwest and adjoining west-central Southeast Bay of Bengal. It is presently centered at Latitude 13.3°N and Longitude 84.7°E, about 725 km southsouthwest of Puri, Odisha and 510 km southsoutheast of Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
Fani would now pick up pace and would track northwestwards till May 1, thereafter re-curving in north-northeast direction towards Odisha on the same day.
Extremely Severe Cyclone Fani is likely to make landfall at Odisha Coast somewhere between Gopalpur and Chandbali around May 3. At the time of crossing the coast, the system would sustain the strength of Extremely Severe Cyclonic storm, though weakening slightly as it would then enter in the unfavorable weather conditions of decreasing seas surface temperatures, rising vertical wind shear and cut off in moisture due to the approaching coast.
Fani would bring some heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at the time of hitting the coast, along with damaging winds to the tune of 170 kmph to 185 kmph, gusting up to 205 kmph. Intense lightning strikes would also be seen.
Sea conditions would also turn very rough during the next three days, with fishermen being strictly advised for not to venture out in the open waters. High sea tides to tune of 13 ft to 14 ft are also expected.
Torrential rains could lead to flooding in the low lying areas, with squally winds leading to damage to kutcha houses and roads, snapping of electricity poles and uprooting trees would be seen. People are advised to remain indoors to avoid any untoward incidents.
