Updated on August 20, 2015 : Cherrapunji inches closer to monthly average rainfall
The unrelenting heavy Monsoon rain in Cherrapunji is expected to cross its monthly average mark this month. With 253 mm of rain received in last 24 hours, the city is inching closer to the mark of 1914 mm, its monthly average rainfall. With this, Cherrapunji has witnessed 1899 mm of rain in August so far.
Updated on August 19, 2015: extremely heavy rainfall breaks 10-year record
Cherrapunji was drenched with the extremely heavy Monsoon rainfall on Tuesday, as city recorded whopping 471.7 mm of rain during last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday. With this, it has broken the record of highest rainfall during the span of 24 hours in last 10 years, which stands at 407.7 mm on August 21, 2005. Heavy to extremely heavy showers have been already lashing Cherrapunji since last few days that has been receiving three-digit rainfall for last five consecutive days. So far in August, Cherrapunji has witnessed 1333 mm of rain against the monthly average of 1914.4 mm. Significant weather activity over the region is due to the Monsoon trough that is running along the foothills of Himalayas, starting from Uttarakhand up to Northeast India. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, Northeast India receives heavy to very heavy rainfall whenever the entire trough is passing through foothills of the region. With Monsoon trough continuing to run across the region, Skymet predicts more heavy showers to lash the entire region including Cherrapunji for at least next 48 hours. As on August 18, Assam & Meghalaya region is rain deficit to the tune of 20%. However, with more weather activity in offing, we are expecting this deficiency to drop by a bit.
