Nagpur along with Central India is likely to face extreme heatwave conditions during summer this year. Experts speaking at the two-day NDMA (National Disaster Management Authority) workshop in Nagpur on Wednesday, attributed the change to global warming.

And keeping this changing weather pattern in mind NDMA is all set with a special action plan. Speaking to media houses, Joint Secretary Dr. V.Thiruppugazh said that the action plan taken up by the authority will help in curbing deaths caused by extreme heatwave conditions.

In 2005, close to 2000 deaths were reported due to heatwave across the region, which came down to 25 in 2018, thanks to the preparedness by government authorities.

The workshop was also attended by IMD, VNIT Nagpur and IITM who stressed on the need to devise ways to reduce the impact of heatwave in the changing scenario.

Some alarming facts also came up during the workshop for the summer season. According to NDMA

  • Heatwave conditions will hit India earlier than expected
  • Number of states experiencing heatwave conditions have risen
  • From 15 affected states in 2005, number increased to 19 in 2018
  • Drought-like conditions and heatwave spell will worsen situation

NDMA in the past has organised two workshops in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
