Extreme cold grips Mount Abu, freezing temperature likely around Christmas

The small hill town of Mount Abu in the state of Rajasthan has been observing extremely harsh winter conditions. The temperatures here have dropped to settle below the monthly average. The minimum temperature in the hill town on December 15 had plummeted to settle at 3°C. There was a further slide on the morning of December 17 when the temperature settled at 1.2°C.

According to senior meteorologists at Skymet, the minimum temperature is likely to remain at the same level for a couple of days. As soon as the Western Disturbance clears from the hills cold conditions grip the plains of North India which also impacts the weather of Mount Abu. And the North India plains is currently witnessing a similar weather condition.

By December 20 another Western Disturbance is going to approach the hills and give snowfall in the region. In a couple of days, the system will clear and again cold conditions will grip the northern plains along with Mount Abu. During this period (Close to Christmas) the night temperature may record close to sub-zero in this hill town.

However, it is to be noted that there are very few occasions when the minimum temperature settles close to or below the freezing point. In the last five years, there have been only two such instances. On December 15, 2018, the minimum had settled at -1°C while on December 2015 the night temperature was a freezing -4°C. Normally the night temperature in Mount Abu sticks around 5 degrees Celsius during the harshest of winters.
