The national capital has been experiencing dry and warm weather conditions since last many days. The months of January, February and March have seen a gradual increase in temperatures in the past years. March this year was the hottest after 2010, as the average maximum temperatures for the month were 3.3°C above normal.

A total of 30 days out 31 days witnessed maximum temperatures above normal and minimum temperatures were also seen above normal for 26 days in the month of March. Normally, rainfall for March is around 16 mm but this year Delhi remained almost dry. Therefore, we can say that pre-monsoon activities failed to appear during the month of March this year.

As far as temperatures are concerned, yesterday, Delhi’s Palam observatory recorded its maximum temperature at 38.5ºC, which is four degrees above the normal levels while Safdarjung Observatory observed 36.4ºC, which is three notches above normal.

Currently, due to a cyclonic circulation over the nearby areas of Delhi-NCR, change in winds has been observed. The northwesterly winds have now become southeasterly in nature.

Along with this, humidity levels have also risen. Temperatures have already shown a rising trend. Thus, the combination of change in wind pattern, high humidity and increased maximums may result in lighting and thunderstorm activities over Delhi-NCR region by today evening for a short duration. This activity will not be an extensive one to cause any major change in temperatures.

However, further during the week, isolated light rain and thundershowers are expected to occur in the Delhi region around April 6 and April 7. Until then, temperatures are expected to remain in the high 30s itself.
