We’ve entered the first week of January and winter continues to elude the plains of Northwest India. Over the last few days, both maximum and minimum temperatures in the region have settled above normal. These unusual weather conditions have heavily impacted the sale of woolen garments in the region.
People in the plains are yet to experience the usual wintry conditions. As a result, woolens remain in closets, and sale of winter wear in these parts has also taken a hit. Sellers have recorded losses and end-of-season sale has arrived early in many shops.
Minimum temperature across many places in West and Central India continues to settle around 2 to 5°C above normal. The same trend is being observed in parts of Punjab, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi NCR.
Winter did tighten its grip over the plains of Northwest India after the second week of December 2015. Heavy snowfall occurred in the hills of North India and cold conditions spread over the plains. A gap of 5 to 7 days between two Western Disturbances (WDs) during this period allowed the icy cold northerly winds to bring down temperatures in the plains of Northwest India. But thereafter, temperatures shot up again.
A fresh WD is likely to give heavy snow over the hills of North India by January 4. Another spell of snowfall is expected on January 8. These successive WDs will continue to block icy northerly winds from entering the plains of Northwest India. As a result, no significant drop in temperatures is expected in the plains.
The first two weeks of January are regarded as the peak period of winter season in this part of the country. As per Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the first ten days of January are likely to observe mostly above normal temperatures in the plains. Therefore, heavy discounts on woolens are a go, and bargaining your way to cheap deals won’t be that difficult as sellers will be more credulous this season.
