The coastal areas of Maharashtra including Mumbai have been observing light to moderate rains for quite some time now. All thanks to the Cyclone Vayu. While the system has weakened into a depression now but has been governing rains over many parts of India.
In the last 24 hours, from 8:30 am on Sunday,Gondiahas recorded 18 mm of rainfall, followed by Dahanu 13.7 mm,Mahabaleshwar11.8 mm, Ratnagiri 11 mm and Alibag 4.5 mm of rainfall. Colaba in Mumbai has recorded 1.4 mm of rainfall, followed by Santa Cruz 0.3 mm of rainfall.
According to Skymet Weather, Cyclone Vayu is now far beyond the reach of Maharashtra. However, as a result of its post effects, south/south-westerlies have commenced over the state. Thus, good rain and thundershower activities are expected over the coastal stations of Maharashtra today and tomorrow as well. Thereafter, rains will taper over the region.
Places like Gondia, Dahanu, Mahabaleshwar, Ratnagiri,Alibag, Santa Cruz and Colaba would record rain and thundershower activities for next 24 to 48 hours.
On the contrary, the rainfall activities would remain on the lower side over the interior parts of Maharashtra for atleast next 24 to 48 hours. After that,scattered light rains with one or two moderate spells may appear over Vidarbha and Marathwada.
By June 19, the intensity of rains will go down over the north coastal Maharashtra, as the strong southwesterly winds associated with Cyclone Vayu will fade away. However, some areas like Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg would continue to get light to moderate rains.
Another spell of rain and thundershowers is expected around June 23, wherein moderate showers with one or two heavy spells may lash several areas of the state. These activities would continue until June 26 and during this period, even the regions of Vidarbha, Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra would observe intense rains. Moreover, all these activities will mark the onset of Monsoon in Maharashtra.
