Effect of Cyclone Kyarr still prevalent, rains lash Ahmedabad and Vadodara

Both the major cities of Vadodara and Ahmedabad in Gujarat have received good rains in the last 24 hours. While, Vadodara recorded 58 mm rains in the last 24 hours, Ahmedabad received 26 mm rains. This is one of the heaviest spells in the month of October for Vadodara and Ahmedabad.

In fact, the monthly average for October of Ahmedabad and Vadodara stands at 11.7 mm and 24.9 mm respectively. Clearly, both the cities have received more rains than even their monthly normals in just a day's span. Moreover, this is the heaviest spell the cities have received in the last ten years.

Not just Vadodara and Ahmedabad, cities like Surendranagar, Kandla, Gandhinagar, Bhavnagar and Rajkot have received 68 mm, 16 mm, 43 mm, 12 mm and 4 mm of rains respectively.

The reason behind these rains is the presence of a feeble Trough over Gujarat region. Moreover, the effect of Cyclone ‘Kyarr’ is still seen over Gujarat due to Southeasterly humid winds blowing over Arabian Sea. Although the Cyclone has moved away from the Indian coast while traversing in Northwest direction, these winds are bringing along moisture with them.

Another Cyclone is likely to form over Southeast Arabian Sea while moving in Northwesterly direction.

Now, we expect these on and off rains to continue over Gujarat including cities like Rajkot, Amreli, Surat, Valsad, etc until November 2.

As a matter of fact, usually, during this time of the year, the weather of entire Gujarat including the cities of Ahmedabad and Vadodara remains almost dry. The month of October is even termed as ‘second summer’ for Gujarat.

It’s an unusual weather phenomenon this year, that on and off rains are going on over Gujarat even in October.
