During the month of June, most parts of India observed good Monsoon showers. The countrywide rainfall was in excess by 16 per cent. However, Bihar even during this period remained 28 per cent rain deficient. East Uttar Pradesh also observed rainfall deficiency of about 12 per cent.

During the second week of July, good rains in Bihar improved the deficiency over Bihar. The state was only 14 per cent deficient (which is considered to be normal). But, the last week of July along with the first week of August only observed scattered rainfall and that too on a few occasions.

Therefore, the deficiency again went up to 31 per cent in Bihar. East Uttar Pradesh stands with 32 per cent rainfall deficiency. Though West Uttar Pradesh is only 18 per cent rain deficient, which is again considered to be normal. These figures clearly indicate that rainfall is a necessity in the aforementioned areas.

At the moment, rain is confined to northern and the northeastern parts of the country. However, Monsoon trough will shift down to the foothills in the next 48 hours. Following this, a system will come up in the Bay of Bengal which will bring rainfall back.

East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar can expect good rains between August 10 and August 13. The foothills of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar may also receive isolated heavy showers during this period. Other parts are expected to observe good Monsoon rains.

This rainy spell may not be sufficient to wipe off the rainfall deficiency in the region. But, it will definitely contain the deficiency and may also lower the deficient figures.
