East India receives good rains due to Monsoon system in Bay

August 9, 2016 12:28 PM | Skymet Weather Team

The upper air cyclonic circulation over Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal is extending up to 7.6 km above the mean sea level. This system seems to be quite intense and is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall over Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand and parts of Bihar. Good Monsoon rains are likely at many places over East Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

During last 24 hours, several places in West Bengal received good rains. Asansol recorded 24.6 mm of rainfall while Kolkata received 58 mm. Digha in West Bengal also received 35.3 mm of rainfall.

In Odisha, Chandbali received 114.3 mm, Paradip 32.8 mm and Bhubaneswar received 7 mm.

Chhapra in Bihar received 39.8 mm of rainfall in a span of 24 hours, from 8.30 am on Monday.

Monsoon rain will continue over East India for another 24 to 48 hours. The cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal seems to be a slow moving system. It will linger on near Gangetic West Bengal for some time. It will gradually move in a northwest direction, towards interiors of Odisha and Jharkhand.

At present, East India is one of the most rain deficient areas of the country. Jharkhand is rain deficient to the tune of 20% and Bihar has received 12% less rains than normal. Gangetic West Bengal has received 5% less rains. The present spell of rainfall will reduce the rainfall deficiency figures to quite a good extent.

During last many days, Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha received good rains. On the other hand, Bihar and East Uttar Pradesh received occasional light rains. Now, intensity of rain will increase across the East India.
