Earthquake strikes off east coast, tremors felt up to Delhi

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 on the Richter Scale struck off east coast of India near Odisha at around 9:52 pm. The epicenter of the earthquake was reported to be 479 km south of Kolkata and 279 km southeast of Paradip in the Bay of Bengal. Rise in sea waves have been reported from coastal areas of West Bengal and Odisha. Tremors were also felt across Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and up to the national capital Delhi/NCR.

Tremors were reported from Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, Ranchi and Jamshedpur, the main cities in this part of the country. People rushed out on to the roads in these cities as the earthquake lasted for 40 seconds, shaking buildings. No loss to property or life has been reported till now. According to Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Meteorology Division in India, Tsunami warning has not been issued yet high sea waves could lead to flooding in coastal areas of Odisha.
