Earthquake of Magnitude 5.5 hits Andaman Islands, no damage reported

An earthquake of 5.5 magnitude earthquake has occurred in Andaman island Indian ocean which lies East of the island nation of Sri Lanka. As per USGS, the epicenter of the quake lies 250 km Southwest from Port Blair. The latitude of the Earthquake is 10.5°N and the Longitude is 91.7° E. The time of the quake has been recorded to be 4.20 PM (Indian Standard Time).

The quake is of moderate nature however, no reports of damage has been heard of. The depth of the quake has been reported to be at 10 km. No Tsunami alert has not been issued as of now.

The Indian sub-continent has a history of major earthquakes. In fact, geographical statistics show that at least 54 percent of India’s land is vulnerable to earthquakes. The Indian regions are divided into four seismic zones, 2,3,4 and 5. 2 being the lowest and 5 being the highest.

Earthquakes of moderate nature not only affect the regions in proximity of the centre of the earthquake and goes up to 100s of km.

For prediction of earthquakes, no technology that exists as of now. Scientists have tried several ways of predicting an earthquake and tsunami, but none have been successful until now.
