Earthquake measuring 5.9 on Richter Scale hits Andaman and Nicobar

A powerful earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale has hit the beautiful Islands of Andaman and Nicobar today around 08:21 am.

According to National Centre for Seismology, a unit of Ministry of Earth Sciences, the quake struck the archipelago at a point about 6.4 degrees north latitude and 92.2 degrees east longitude. The epicenter of the tremblor was at a depth of 10 km.

Meteorologists termed the earthquake as moderate. This relatively low intensity quake did not trigger a tsunami warning over the region. Hence, no casualties to life and property have been reported so far.

India has a tsunami warning center that sends alerts to states and neighboring countries in case of an earthquake.

Two months back, a strong earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale struck the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago at a depth of 27 km, but no tsunami alert was issued.

As per the Weathermen, the area around the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Indonesian archipelago is known to be a high seismic zone and often records tremors.

This is also the region which witnessed massive quake in 2004 that resulted in tsunami killing thousands across India, Indonesia, Thailand and Sri Lanka.

Today, another earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale strikes off Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir today at 5.48 am.
