Earthquake jolts India’s Assam and Bhutan

Earhquake in AssamAn earthquake of moderate intensity rocked Assam and neighbouring country Bhutan on Friday night.

Measuring 4.6 on the Richter Scale, the quake had its epicenter in Darrang district of Assam and had struck around 10:27 pm.

Tremors were also felt in the other northeastern states including Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and adjoining areas.

However, no casualties or damage to property have been reported so far. As per reports, the quake had lasted for about 10 to 12 seconds.

Earlier in June, Assam had witnessed earthquake of similar intensity. A strong earthquake had jolted Guwahati and several other parts of the state in April as well.

Northeast India is the sixth major earthquake-prone belt in the world. Northeast region lies above the junction point of Indian tectonic plate, Australian tectonic plate and Eurasian tectonic plate, which makes it a very high risk damage zone.
