Early onset of Monsoon could hamper IPL final in Bangalore

May 16, 2014 12:32 PM |

Bangalore is an easy anchor, the IT hub of the country and a place where many different kinds of people have traditionally felt at home. This capital of Karnataka is a very old city but today Bangalore is a transformed new world driven by sudden inflow of money full of charm and hardly bothered by its vanished history.

Bangalore was once one of the cleaner cities in India but rapid urbanisation in recent years has left its huge population struggling with air pollution and infrastructural problems. Day to day life here is often affected by road congestion due to very high traffic density. However, Bangalore proudly claims of a good urban planning and design when compared to other Indian cities.

Cricket rules the mind of people living here; thanks to all the national cricket players hailing from this garden city. The enthusiasm for this sport reaches uncanny heights from time to time, even by Indian standards. But keeping aside sentiments of cricket lovers, was it actually a good move on the part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council to revamp the schedule of the final match and shift it to Bangalore?

Weather in Bangalore during IPL Final match

Weather-wise probably it isn't a very good decision considering the fact that the final match is on the first day of June and according to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the very vital Monsoon season is expected to make an early onset in India. The Southwest Monsoon is likely to strike Kerala on the 28th of May against its usual onset date of 1st June. Accordingly, Bangalore might start receiving monsoon showers by first week of June and pre-monsoon rain will anyway continue.

Seems like, the organisers have not really taken into account the weather while finalising the venue of the final match of this two-month-long event. Nevertheless, talks are still doing rounds and the IPL chairman Ranjib Biswal replied to the protest letter received from Mumbai Cricket Association with few conditions attached to host the finals. But according to media reports, changing the venue back to Mumbai is not a viable option due to various reasons and the BCCI can’t keep changing the venue of the final match every second day.

The council had to take the decision of hosting the final match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore after the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) raised its hands and refused to host any of the IPL matches in Chennai due to an on-going legal tussle with the municipal authorities regarding construction of three stands at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.

Rain in Bangalore

Weather in Bangalore is generally warm during the day and very pleasant during the night because of its terrain. It is a plateau and receives cool winds at nights from the nearby hills. The average rain for the monsoon months of June and July are 89 mm and 108 mm, respectively. Rain picks up with the onset of Northeast Monsoon and September and October receives 241 mm and 154 mm of rain on and average.
