Dusty winds envelops Delhi, relief expected soon

May 27, 2016 11:47 AM | Skymet Weather Team

Delhi woke up to a dusty morning today and dust, haze was visible all over the places. The visibility went down to 1000 meters over Palam airport. This was due to a sudden change in the wind direction from easterly, southeasterly to south westerly. Since 20th May 2016, Delhi and nearby areas of NCR were experiencing warm and humid winds coming from Bay of Bengal. Due to these winds, the humidity level had increased leading to cloud formation and on and off rain-thundershower activity. As this is the pre-monsoon season, therefore, the most probable time of thundershower is during late afternoon, evening or early morning.

These dry and hot winds coming from Rajasthan has decreased the humidity levels significantly and the dust from Thar Desert, Rajasthan has traveled all over to Delhi NCR leading to dust haze. Relatively drier weather conditions are expected to continue for another 48 hours due to these dust haze. People may get relief from these drier winds and dust haze by 29th May 2016 as fresh Western Disturbance is expected to approach western Himalayas which may induce a cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and Haryana.

As per Skymet weather, thundershower activity and thunder cloud formation are again expected on 29th and 30th May 2016. This is due to the change in wind directions that would start blowing from east and southeast direction. During this period, a temporary relief is expected due to the improvement in visibility. The dust in suspension is also expected to settle down.
