Dust Storms Likely Over Delhi During This Week, Hot Weekend Awaits

After having a marathon of above 45°C for six days, between 26th and 31st May, Delhi observed little respite. Maximum temperature slid to 42.8°C, about 3°C above the normal. Excruciating heat seems to have abated and similar temperatures are likely for the next 4 days. Heat is likely to return on the weekend and the searing wave will hit the capital city, once again. During the weekdays, strong winds and thunderstorms may kick up some dust/dust-raising winds. Light rain may follow these gusty winds, dropping mercury, albeit temporarily, by 3-4°C.

The capital city has had a long dry weather run for over two weeks. Only, a trace of rainfall was recorded on 29th May, at Safdarjung, when some parts of NCR received decent sharp showers.  Merely 0.4mm of rainfall was recorded against the normal of 30.7mm in the month. Though the month of June predominantly remains a pre-monsoon month, the average rainfall climbs to 74.1mm. Monsoon arrives only in the fag end of the month.

There is a new western disturbance likely tomorrow, over the mountains. Also, there is a cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and adjoining Rajasthan region. A trough is running from the circulation, across Punjab and Haryana, passing north of Delhi. Normally, such conditions are not conducive for any thunderstorm over Delhi. However, there is a sharp curvature of the winds, in the proximity of Delhi. Coupled with localized heat, the two together can trigger some tall clouds with strong updrafts. During the dissipating phase of these cells, strong gusty and dusty winds are likely. There are chances of a dust storm for the next 4 days, between 03rd and 07th June. Strong and hot winds in the afternoon can trigger ‘loo’ conditions, as well.

The day temperature may remain confined between 42°-43°C for the next 3-4 days. Clearance of western disturbance and cessation of the dust storm spell may once again lead to a rise in mercury levels. Heat wave conditions may return with temperature rising to 44°-45°C, around the weekend. Searing heat will even spill over to the next week, as well.
