Recently, Delhi’s air quality deteriorated to ‘severe’ due to a dust storm in North West India due to a Western Disturbance as an upper air system over North Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir. Also, its induced Cyclonic Circulation is over Southwest Rajasthan. Both these systems are likely to move in northeast direction. The wind speed is expected to be around 55 kmph in gusts.
Currently, the Air Quality Index stands at 202 which falls under moderate category.
An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'.
Whenever Air Quality Index deteriorates people should avoid physical activity outdoors. At the time of dust storm activity, give a miss to walk. Stop any activity level if one experiences any unusual coughing, chest discomfort, wheezing, breathing difficulty or fatigue and consult doctor. If the room has windows, close them.
The weather systems are likely to persist over the region for the next couple of days. Dust storm and thunderstorm with light rains is a possibility wherein the wind speed might touch 40-50 kmph in gust. During pre-Monsoon, the activities are generally seen towards late afternoon or evening hours. Generally, morning would be clear with very warm afternoon. Temperatures might drop only after the activities take place.
Since, the rains would be light, immediate improvement in Air Quality will not be observed. Intensity of rains is likely to go up around May 14 and only then there is a possibility of Air Quality Index to improve. In other words, we can say that Delhi air quality will improve due to Western Disturbance and gusty thunder storm but occasional episodes of sudden peaking of dust at isolated places in North West India, including Delhi will be seen. Similar weather conditions would be observed in Northwest Uttar Pradesh. Places like Meerut, Agra, Muzaffarnagar and Mathura would be affected by these weather systems.
