Dust Storm Likely In Delhi, Heat Wave To Become Strong On Weekend

June 4, 2024 12:57 PM |

The capital city experienced light rain in some areas in the wee hours. Both the observatories, Safdarjung and Palam, recorded thunderstorms, gusty winds and a trace of rainfall, between 0200hr and 0400hr. Earlier, the city recorded yet another ‘heat wave’ day and the mercury reached 44.7°C, about 5°C above normal. This light spell of rain and thunderstorm is unlikely to provide any relief from the heat and the day temperature will remain around mid 40’s. The approaching weekend will have the heat searing further and mercury may breach 46°C in some parts of Delhi/NCR.

A fresh western disturbance is approaching the northern mountains in the evening/ tonight.  Already, there is cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and adjoining parts of Rajasthan. An east-west trough is extending from the circulation, running close but north of Delhi. Sharp turning of winds is providing vorticity support, quite favourable for cloud up, late afternoon/ evening. The heat factor may join as a trigger and another spell of dust storm/ thunderstorm is likely. Strong and gusty winds are likely to accompany.

The conditions will remain favourable for similar activity between 04th and 08th June. However, the temperatures will keep crossing 40°C and hover around 43°C. The cessation of activity on the weekend is likely. Heat factor will increase on 08th & 09th June and the mercury may breach 45°C mark. Heat wave will become strong and piercing. Scorching heat will spill over to the next week and tighten the grip, at least till the mid-week next.
