Dust storm and heat worsen Delhi's air pollution crisis

Dust storm and heat to worsen Delhi's air pollution crisisThe dust storm which swept through Delhi-NCR on Thursday morning brought down day temperatures, but raised concerns regarding the city’s air pollution levels. Toxin levels in the air rose to alarming levels as the capital’s air quality index (AQI) went past the ‘severe’ level.

Thursday’s dust storm pushed Delhi’s AQI level to severe levels for the first time since winter. PM 2.5 levels were touching 250 micrograms per cubic meters which is four times the safe standard. The dust storm on Thursday also led to an increase in PM10 particles. PM 2.5 are minute particles which can enter a person’s lungs and trigger respiratory discomfort. PM10 air particles are coarse pollution particles and even they are damaging to an individual’s lungs.

Extremely high temperatures in the past few days kept O3 levels high on a consistent basis in and around Delhi-NCR. Conditions with high temperature and direct sunlight, combined with high levels of NOx and CO, are favorable for creation of ozone. Moreover, the UV index for Delhi on Thursday rose to 7.2, while the safe range is 1 to 4.

As per Skymet Meteorology Division in India, plains in North India are expected to witness more dust storm activity in coming days. Delhi too is expected to witness dust storm activity on consecutive days which may push the pollution level in the capital again. While heat wave conditions in Delhi-NCR continue to abate, the air pollution crisis still looms large over Delhiites.

Experts advise consumption of fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables in order to combat the ill effects of rising air pollution. Fruits and leafy vegetables are packed with anti-oxidants which help fight pollutants and strengthen our body’s overall defense mechanism. Also, staying indoors during peak traffic hours can protect you from vehicular emissions and more.
