Almost the entire month of January remained dry for Southern Peninsular India. Thus, Kerala and Karnataka too observed dry weather conditions and the month proved to be a rain deficient month for both the states.
While light showers occurred during the fag end of the month in parts of Kerala, the state of Karnataka continued to remain dry. However, even these rains were not widespread and remained confined to the southern coastal stations of the state.
As of now also, Skymet Weather predicts somewhat similar weather to prevail over both the states in another 2-3 days.

As per Skymet Weather, a ridge of an anti-cyclonic circulation is likely to form over Telangana, adjoining South Coastal Odisha and North Coastal Andhra Pradesh at mid-tropospheric levels. This weather system is shifting eastwards over the Arakan Coast.
In addition to this, an upper air trough is likely to get developed along the western coast from Kerala to Konkan and Goa. In the wake of this weather system, warm and moist winds from the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean would start affecting both the states of Kerala and Karnataka.

Due to these weather systems, clouding would increase over both the states thereby resulting in rains. In fact, South Kerala would start receiving light rains from February 5 onward.
Thereafter, by February 6, almost entire Kerala, South Interior Karnataka including Bengaluru and adjoining Rayalaseema would start receiving light to moderate rains. The intensity of rains, however, would be more over South Interior Karnataka.
Thereafter, by February 7, the rain belt is expected to move towards the north, covering the northern interior districts of Karnataka as well. However, the intensity of rain over North Interior Karnataka would be light to very light.
Henceforth, by February 8, the weather across both the states is anticipated to start clearing up and the temperatures which would have dropped due to rain and cloud cover are expected to start increasing.
