Dry week ahead for Tamil Nadu, rains to remain far away

Northeast Monsoon officially gets over by the end of December. However, some rainfall activity is witnessed during the month of January. Meanwhile, the amount of rains reduces by quite an extent during this time as compared to the months of November and December.

As the month progresses, heavy rains take a backseat. Only a couple of rainfall episodes are witnessed and that too not everytime. This time, after the official end of the Northeast Monsoon, the state of Tamil Nadu saw a spell of rain when the state witnessed showers of varied intensity for four days.

It was during this time that Karaikal saw a whopping 102 mm of rains, breaking the decade old rainfall record for January. Other parts of the state also witnessed light to moderate showers in view of the weather systems prevailing in the Bay of Bengal in the form of a low-pressure area.

Now, as per weathermen at Skymet Weather, the state is expected to witness dry days for at least one week. Rainfall activity is expected to further reduce as the months of February and March are the least rainy months.

However, some light rains may occur around January 21 and 22 over southern parts of Coastal Tamil Nadu in view of a cyclonic circulation developing in the Bay of Bengal.
