Dry weather to prevail over Pune, Nashik, Satara; pest attack on crops likely

Weather in Pune

Maharashtra continues to reel under warm and dry weather conditions for the last couple of days. The similar weather has been prevalent in the Konkan and Goa region. However, the region has witnessed a reduction in the temperatures in the last 2-3 days, despite this drop, maximum temperatures are settling close to normal.

As per Skymet Weather, this drop in the temperatures is associated with the flow of dry and cool north and northeasterly winds. As these winds are likely to continue to blow over the region for the next 2-3 days, the temperatures are expected to remain on the higher side though any further rise is not expected. While the minimums are likely to remain slightly above the normal levels.

Yesterday, places like Alibag, Dahanu, Nashik, Pune, Mumbai, Sangli and Satara all witnessed the daytime high marginally above normal.

The weather of Madhya Maharashtra is also dry for the last many days. The sky is almost clear over the region which is why the region has been witnessing warm and sunny days.

However, as per Skymet Weather, due to the formation of a confluence zone around March 8, clouding is expected to increase over North Madhya Maharashtra. Places such as Nashik, Malegaon, Jalgaon, and Pune would witness cloud cover. However, this cloud cover would not result in dropping the temperatures and both day and night temperatures would continue to remain above normal for the next 2-3 days.

Let us see the impact of this weather on agriculture of Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra region:

Farmers are advised to complete harvesting of late sown Rabi crops. Due to increased temperatures, summer crops and newly planted orchard of mango, Pomegranate, Banana, and vegetables require irrigation frequently.

Farmers are also recommended to apply mulching of grass/straws to the fruit crops. The farmer should continue the harvesting of Pomegranate and Grapes and should also check pest attack on vegetable crops due to increased temperatures. Due to variation in temperature,  there are chances of flower and fruit drop in the mango, pomegranate, and sweet lime, so farmers have to be vigilant.
