Dry weather in Mumbai, Nagpur, Akola; rain in Sangli, Satara, Vengurla

Heatwave continues to grip a few parts of Vidarbha, Maharashtra as the temperatures continue to score above the 45-degree mark. However, the temperatures of South Konkan and South Madhya Maharashtra region witnessed a drop which was due to the occurrence of light rains.

On Thursday, the maximum temperatures recorded by Wardha stood at a whopping 46ºC, Chandrapur at 45.7ºC, Bramhapuri 45.2ºC, Parbhani 44.8ºC, Amravati 44.8ºC, Nagpur 44.7ºC, Akola 44.7ºC, and Yeotmal recorded the daytime high at 44.5ºC.

Meanwhile, on the same day, the maximum temperature of Harnai stood at 33.2ºC, Mumbai 34.7ºC, Pune 35.7ºC, Nashik 36.3ºC, and the daytime high of Mahabaleshwar dipped to a pleasant 24.6ºC.

Light rains to the tune of 3 mm were witnessed by Chandrapur in the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Thursday, followed by Satara with 0.9 mm of rains, Sangli 0.5 mm, Kolhapur 0.4 mm, and Vengurla recorded some rainy traces.

As of now also, we expect heatwave conditions to continue over many parts of Vidarbha and at isolated pockets of Marathwada. One or two places of North Madhya Maharashtra may also see some light spells. Light rain may also occur at a few places over South Madhya Maharashtra and South Konkan division as well.

Weather is exp dry over rest all places, but few clouds may occur.

At this stage, let us see the impact of this weather on the agriculture belt of Maharashtra: 

In the wake of heatwave conditions, farmers are advised to undertake to harvest of matured summer crops/vegetables. Farmers should also apply frequent light irrigation coupled with basin mulching in citrus orchards to reduce solar heat stress.

For the ensuing Kharif season, farmers should ensure the availability of seeds as per the crop/cultivar planning and ensure other inputs well in advance. As there is an increase in the average temperature, irrigation should be given to Coconut orchard at 5-6 days interval and to Arecanut orchard at 4-5 days interval.
