Dry Weather Continue For Delhi, Showers Likely Next Week

Dry weather conditions continue for the national capital. Nearly 2 weeks, without monsoon rains for Delhi and the neighbourhood, is not very common at this time of the year. The absence of clouds and scarcity of rain resulted spike in temperatures. The maximum temperature remained above the average by 3-5°C during the first week of September.  Mercury shot up to 40.1°C on 04th September, a whopping 6°C above the normal. Dry weather conditions are likely to continue beyond the weekend and likely showers thereafter.

Earlier, the monsoon trough had shifted close to the foothills, far to the north of the capital city Delhi. A low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal which has now moved inland over parts of Chhattisgarh and adjoining parts of Odisha and East Madhya Pradesh.  The cyclonic circulation of the system has established easterly winds along Indo-Gangetic plains.  This feature has dragged the western end of the monsoon trough southward. There is plenty of weather activity in association with this feature over parts of Madhya Pradesh. East Rajasthan and Delhi remain on the peripherals of the main system.

Shifting of the trough and reversal of the wind pattern will change the weather conditions for Delhi. With the easterly winds, there could be a slight drop in the day temperature and an increase in the humidity levels, making the days a little warm and humid. Some clouds may appear over and around Delhi for the next 3-4 days. However, rains are unlikely during this period. At best, there could be fine and fleeting drizzle in some areas, for a brief period.

Showers are likely, albeit mild, during next week. A dry cyclonic circulation is likely over North Punjab and adjoining Pakistan on 10th September. This feature will remain on and off over the region for the subsequent 4-5 days.  This change will bring the monsoon trough in close proximity to Delhi. North-South oscillation of the trough will favour light to moderate showers over Delhi/NCR between 12th and 15th September.
