Back-to-back western disturbances moving across the mountains of northern hilly states have dumped piles of snow, during the last few days. Undoubtedly, a welcome event and saviour of ecological balance. Also, a delight for tourists, adventure activities, crops and perennial water sources. The grey side of the spectacular show remains a threat of avalanches, invariably following the massive whiteout across the mountain ranges and glaciers.
Avalanche refers to the roll down of piles of snow, sliding down the slopes of mountains and glaciers. An avalanche is a ‘no notice’ calamity, akin to an earthquake, with the important difference that these can be widely anticipated. Avalanche strikes unannounced and the rolling debris comes down with massive speed, dragging stacks of snow, rocks, mud, trees and any other object, coming its way. Some of the avalanches in the inaccessible areas possibly go unnoticed. However, these have devastating impacts and do not provide the liberty to initiate any evasive action.
Western disturbances have largely cleared the mountains of North India. Dry weather conditions are expected for the next week or maybe longer. A fair amount of sunshine will trigger a rise in the temperatures, albeit still remaining sub-zero in many parts. However, easing out of temperatures may result in the melting of snow in some areas. This temperature differential also weakens the base of the snow mounds and makes it vulnerable to slide, under its own weight.
The dry days after the heavy spell of snow, sound caution for the locals if residing close to the risky areas. Adventurists and mountaineers, invariably fall prey to these inclement conditions, when caught unaware. Military personnel patrolling the difficult terrain bear the risk of getting trapped in some of these eventualities. Regular forecasts of likely avalanches and the respective pockets, get disseminated to stay aware and mindful of action. Advise, exercise caution.
