Dry spell to continue in rain deficit Chennai

Rain-deficit Chennai is likely to continue with dry weather conditions for the next few days. All thanks to the absence of any significant weather over or around the city.

The state capital had last recorded rain on November 16 to the tune of 17.9 mm. It has been dry ever since then. Moreover, weathermen do not predict any rains in the coming days as well.

Similar weather conditions will prevail over rest of Tamil Nadu and Kerala but one or two showers cannot be ruled out over these places.

Further, the conditions are not even favourable for the formation of any weather system near Chennai. According to Skymet Weather, this is due to very week or slightly negative MJO (Madden-Julian Oscillation) prevailing over the region.
This prevents the development of any significant weather system over the area.

Besides this, upper winds are still southerly and southwesterly that should have been westerly by this time. Even the wind temperatures are in the warmer range of 10°N to 20°N, which should have been in decreasing order below 10 degrees.
All these factors have led to subdued Northeast Monsoon, resulting in scarce rainfall over Peninsular India.

November is supposed to be the rainiest month for Tamil Nadu including Chennai. However, there has been no significant spell of rains over the state till now in the month.

So far, Chennai has recorded mere 50.2 mm of rain against the monthly average of 407.4 mm.

In wake of dry weather, day maximums have also increased over Chennai and are now settling above normal. On Thursday, the city recorded 30.6°C that is two degrees above normal.
