The dry weather in Kolkata is likely to be replaced with cloudy skies and rain showers around new year's eve. The year 2015 is expected to bring wet conditions to the City of Joy which has been experiencing a dry spell for more than 60 days.
The southwest monsoon withdrew from the region in the first half of October this year. Thereafter, the weather in the city has been dry with only traces of rain hitting the region. On 15th October, 2014, the city witnessed 3 mm rainfall and on 27th October, 2014, it received 0.1 mm rainfall. Normally, Kolkata experiences around 31 mm rainfall in November and close to 9 mm rainfall in the month of December. But this year, both these months have remained dry with no rain.
But now a system residing in the Bay of Bengal is expected to travel to the city, providing light to moderate rain showers. This system has been moving across the east coast of India causing rain in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. As the system moves upwards, it is likely to cause rain in Kolkata.
Currently, moderate temperatures are being observed in the city. The maximums are being recorded in the mid-twenties whereas the minimums are hovering in double digits around 12-13. The weather is extremely pleasant at this point of time and is perfect for a visit to the city. The weather is expected to remain pleasant till mid-January.
