July 31, 2015 12:48 PM |

Rajasthan FloodsThis year during Monsoon, parts of Rajasthan have witnessed unusually good rainfall activity. Till date, the state of Rajasthan has received excess rainfall. West Rajasthan has recorded +107% rainfall and East Rajasthan has received +40% excess rainfall.

In fact, in the last 24 hours, West Rajasthan has observed +899% rainfall as the region recorded 30 mm of rain against a normal of 3 mm. Similarly, East Rajasthan too has witnessed +79% rainfall with the region receiving 13.2 mm of rain against an average of 7.4 mm. In the last 24 hours, Bikaner recorded 36.8 mm rainfall, Churu 18.4 mm, and Jaisalmer 24.9 mm.

During last one week, the southern, central, and western parts of the state have received heavy to very heavy rainfall due to the deep depression which was hovering above Gujarat and adjoining South Rajasthan. The system persisted for some time and gradually moved in the northwest direction where it weakened to a low pressure. Currently the system is settling above northwest Rajasthan as a low pressure.

As per Skymet Meteorology Division in India, good rains will continue over northwest Rajasthan for another 24 hours. Good rainfall activity will be witnessed in the Bikaner, Churu, and Sri Ganganagar region. The normal rainfall of West and Central Rajasthan is very less, but this year, two weather systems have given good rainfall in June. First Cyclone Ashobaa around June 22-23 and then another deep depression affected Gujarat and South Rajasthan giving heavy rains over several districts.

Currently, several districts of Rajasthan are already facing flood-like conditions due to incessant rain over the region. But now, rain over the region has reduced, and the flood situation in the region is likely to improve. Another spell of rain is expected over eastern districts of Rajasthan, mainly in Sawai Madhopur, Jaipur, Kota, and Tonk, around August 6 and 7. Till then, weather in the region will remain mostly dry with only occasional showers expected.
