The national capital is likely to witness a breezy cold New Year's Eve. There is no likelihood of any rains to restrict the festivities, only undercover. The comfort level, of course, will be a lot better under a shelter. Breeze is going to be mercilessly cold and pinching in the open and therefore hard and thick layers of clothes will be a better option. The late evening hours are expected to be foggy and misty, needing careful driving, post celebrations.

Earlier, the city recorded a very low maximum temperature of 15°C on 27th Dec, the lowest in the last 5 years. This also marked the first cold day of the season as the minimum temperature was below 10°C and the maximum was about 5°C below the normal. There was a record rainfall of 41mm on this day, leading to the wettest December day in the last 101 years. The base observatory at Safdarjung has recorded a total of 53.5mm of rainfall during the month against an average of 9.4mm. The city has an all-time record of 134.4mm rainfall during the month of 1984.

The active western disturbance has already cleared the mountains. The plains were also lashed with widespread typical winter showers on 27th Dec and the remnant effect on 28th, as well. Another pair of western disturbances is approaching anytime soon. The hilly states will have the weather activity during the entire week from 01st to 05thJan 2025 and may even spill over to the next week. However, the rain and snow will remain confined to the hills and plains are not likely to get affected. Accordingly, Delhi also will observe a dry and chilly week. The presence of western disturbance, up in the mountains will restrict any sharp drop in the mercury levels during this period.

The duo of western disturbances across the mountains is likely to have an induced system developing over the plains, later in the week. This may trigger another spell of winter rains over the plains, albeit not as large as the previous one. Still, the national capital stands a chance of a few showers early next week.
