Dry and sunny days ahead for Punjab and Haryana, strong winds to keep mercury undercheck

After witnessing on and off rain and thundershowers for the entire winter season, Punjab and Haryana are now heading towards warm and dry spell. However, temperatures both day and night have remained on the lower side in Punjab and Haryana. All thanks to the northwesterly winds blowing from snow clad Himalayas, which have restricted the rise in mercury till now.

The northern districts such as Pathankot, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Kapurthala in Punjab and Chandigarh, Yamunanagar, Ambala, Karnal in Haryana are still observing their maximum temperatures in mid-20’s.

Meanwhile, the southern districts such as Bhatinda, Sangrur, Mansa, Patiala, Muktsar in Punjab and Hisar, Sirsa, Rohtak, Faridabad, Gurugram in Haryana are comparatively warmer and are witnessing their day temperatures around 30˚C.

During the last 24 hours, traces of rain were recorded in Karnal along with strong winds in most parts of Punjab and Haryana. These weather activities have been attributed to the Western Disturbance over the northern hills and its induced cyclonic circulation over Northwest Rajasthan.

As these weather systems are now moving away eastwards, we do not expect any weather activity over parts of Punjab and Haryana during the coming two to three days. In fact, day will be sunny and dry. However, parts of these states will continue to receive strong winds, which would keep temperatures undercheck.

The states of Punjab and Haryana are currently rain deficient. Even though the Western Disturbances and their induced cyclonic circulations were frequent over the region but they resulted only in clouding and light rainfall activity. Thus, the states did not manage to cover up their rain deficiency. In fact, as of March 25, the state of Punjab is rain deficient by 54% and Haryana by 28%.
