Day temperatures have risen very steeply for the national capital over the last one week. Yesterday, Maximum temperature climbed to 34.7°C at base observatory Safdarjung, about 5°C above the normal. Meteorological office at Lodhi Road breached 35°C mark (35.4°C), about 6°C above the average at this time. Observatories at Ayanagar and Pitampura were a notch above and registered 35.4°C and 35.9°C respectively. Mercury shot up to measure a record high of 36.2°C at Najafgarh and Sports Complex, about 7°C above the normal. The minimum temperatures also remained about 6-8°C more than the normal.
Unlike last few years, Delhi has not recorded any rainfall in March during the first 2 weeks. Mostly, the winter rains of February get extended to the 1st half of March. The last rain observed over Delhi/ NCR was on Feb 26 &27. There have been instances in the past, like in 2010 and 2018, when just trace of rainfall was witnessed during the entire month, against its normal of 15.9mm. On the other hand, there have been occasions of heavy rainfall in March. The capital city remained shy of 3 digit record in March 2015 and stayed very close at 97.4mm.

Visibly, year 2018 has been the warmest breaching 36°C mark and 2021 and 2022 at close 2nd and 3rd position respectively. Upcoming days for the national capital are likely to be dry for the 3rd successive week. Rising trend of temperature will be maintained. Mercury is expected to climb to 36-37°C during next 6-7days. Strong surface winds are expected today and become rather weak tomorrow onwards. Heat factor will rise for the capital city over the next few days.
