Drought No More: Marathwada Welcomes Monsoon 2016

June 20, 2016 1:03 PM | Skymet Weather Team

From being on the verge of facing another year of drought to welcoming Southwest Monsoon a day earlier than Mumbai – Marathwada and Vidarbha finally rejoice the fresh showers of Monsoon this year.

The Southwest Monsoon has covered the entire region Vidarbha & Marathwada. During last 24 hours good rains have been observed over these regions.

Rainfall figures in the drought hit regions stand at Akola 41mm, Buldana 13 mm, Washim 8 mm, Wardha 7 mm, Yavatmal 4 mm, Aurangabad – 12 mm, Nanded 6 mm. Parbhani and Amrawati rejoice light rain of 3mm each.

In fact, these areas received good rainfall during last 48 hours and we expect that moderate rainfall with heavy at one or two paces may continue for another 24 hours. Thereafter, scattered light to moderate rain is expected till June 24.

After 24 hours, there will be slight decrease in rain intensity but on and off rains will continue. Since last 2 years Marathwada is facing severe drought. But these rains will help in restoring ground water over the area throughout the month. Though Monsoon has reached a bit late but the current continuous rainfall will be there with occasional gap of 1-2 days.

As per Skymet Weather, Monsoon will pick up pace in the month of July and August and the rain will be above normal over these regions which otherwise remain rain deficient, even during monsoon.

It is now in the hands of government and local authorities to come up with ways to save up more and more of this rain water to last till next year, in order to avoid facing another year of drought.
