Drought like situation may continue over Gujarat

August 9, 2021 1:32 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Weather of Gujarat is almost dry since last many days. Few Good spells were witnessed over southern and central parts of the state in the second week of July and on July 24 and 25th. Most parts of Saurashtra in Kutch are facing drought like situation.

Between June 01 and August 08, Saurashtra and Kutch is deficient by 45% and Gujarat region by 42%. We do not expect any significant increase in rain activities over the state in next 8 to 10 days. However, there may be marginal increase in rain between August 13 and 15. But these rains will not be heavy to very heavy. There may be light to moderate rains during this period.

Gujarat has received heavy showers in the month of May in the wake of cyclone Tauktae. There were few good spells during 3rd and 4th week of June over Gujarat. But since then, weather is almost dry barring few days of July. Reason for this prolonged dry spell can be attributed to absence of any weather system over Northeast Arabian Sea. Moreover, low pressure areas which developed over Bay of Bengal have travelled up to central parts and Northwestern parts of Madhya Pradesh. Their impact was negligible over Gujarat in terms of rain.

We do not expect any weather system developing over Northeast Arabian Sea for over Gujarat during next 8 to 10 days. Groundnut, soybean and cotton crops are on the verge of collapse due to shortage of rain. Situation does not seem to be improving in coming days. Water reservoirs of the state will also be depleting gradually.
