The entire state of Odisha remained rain surplus during the Southwest Monsoon, ending with an excess of 12%. This surplus continued through October also on account of good rain spells. The major contributor of rain was Cyclone ‘Titli’ which has given heavy to extremely heavy rains. As a result, Odisha is 25% rain surplus as on October 23.
However presently, dry winds are prevailing over most parts of Odisha. Therefore, we expect dry weather conditions to continue over the state. Coastal districts of Odisha may become partly cloudy during the next two days. Also. we expect isolated light rain and thundershower activities during next 24 hours in the coastal districts. But as no moderate to heavy showers are being expected, therefore the rain surplus will not show any increase.
In the absence of any weather system, in and around Odisha, weather is expected to remain dry for at least next 4-5 days. The rain surplus of 25% will then decrease gradually.
Day temperatures over most parts of the state will remain in mid 30s to lower 30s, leading to warm weather conditions. Night will also remain comfortable. The temperatures will be between 21 to 24 degree Celsius. So, we can say that dry weather is ahead for Odisha.
Talking about the state of West Bengal, the Gangetic West Bengal region has received scattered light rains during the last 24 hours, but Sub-Himalayan West Bengal remained dry. Monsoon 2018 ended with deficiency of 20% for Gangetic West Bengal whereas Sub-Himalayan West Bengal was deficient by 13%.
Dry weather is expected over the entire state for next 4 to 5 days therefore the rain deficiency is going to increase further, leading to drought-like conditions. This might hamper the upcoming Rabi crops over the state.
