Driest Winters For Northern Plains, Poor Show Of Rains May Impact Crops

January 11, 2023 7:24 PM |

Agri bowl of India, comprising Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, are witnessing distressing show of winter rains. Almost entire region has remained completely dry so far. Meteorological conditions are not promising any immediate big relief and the entire region may, at best have light sprinkle in the next 2 days.

November is the least rainiest month over North India and is repeatedly observed going literally dry. Same is not the case with December. In fact, December and January clubbed together, bring decent showers with fair amount of reliability. Poor show of rains so far and dissuading signs in the next 10days, raises concern and worries for the farmers. Range of Rabi crop still live with a distant hope of pleasing showers, bringing smiles for the farming sector.

Visibly, 2019 experienced rainiest  December, with deluge across all parts of North India.  Dec 2022 and  Dec 2021 have been the poorest, worst still being 2022. Similar performance was observed in 2016.  In addition to December 2022, the first phase of Jan 2023 has traced the same track.  Zero rainfall has been recorded  between 01st and 11th Jan 2023 across the region.

Current Western Disturbance over the northern mountains, coupled with induced cyclonic circulation over plains is expected to break the jinx.  Northern parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and extreme western parts of Uttar Pradesh are likely to have light rainfall on 12th and 13th Jan 2023.
