Does Pre Monsoon activity have any linkage with Monsoon rainsVarious parts of the country have been witnessing increased amount of Pre-Monsoon activities in the last couple of days. Talking regionally, North India saw two episodes of dust storm, thunderstorm, rainfall along with lightning strikes.

Meanwhile, Northeast India observed an extended wet spell for days. South India also saw a good spell of rains during the last 48 hours with a few areas witnessing very heavy rains inclusive of parts of Kerala and Interior Tamil Nadu.

While some of these activities passed with a whimper, others did make a rumble in terms of heavy showers.

The question here is that do these Pre-Monsoon activities have any linkage with Monsoon. Does this spell point towards Monsoon performance? Is the frequency or spread any way related to the coming Monsoon season. Well, the simple answer here would be a no.

The month of May is the peak Pre-Monsoon month wherein the maximum number of weather phenomena are seen. These phenomena are basically the stabilizers of the abnormal weather conditions that come up in the atmosphere. The absence of any such weather activities for a couple of days leads to accumulation of heat.

To bring it back to neutral, these weather activities are a necessity during this time. In fact, four to five days of a non-active period is good enough for the region to prepare for an upcoming weather activity as these activities generally take place after that amount of time.

East, Northeast and North India are the favoured pockets or violent weather activities. Central India on the other hand remains mostly silent and is dominated by heat. While we describe this pattern, the North Indian systems are devoid of moisture. Meanwhile, East and Northeast systems due to the proximity to Bay of Bengal get enough moisture. South India also gets its share of moisture content from both Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.

In the northern side, the activities are more of strong-winds along with dust storm with lesser number of rains. South, East and Northeast India are the pockets witnessing good rainfall activities.

These are the peculiarities of the season which show variation of weather patterns. Thus, it becomes very difficult to find a linkage between Pre-Monsoon showers and Monsoon. To assess a linkage, there should be one variable while the Pre-Monsoon season has way too many variables. This range of weather phenomena does not help in assessing the health of the Monsoon season.
