While Southwest Monsoon was delayed over almost entire country, a few cities did record good rains during the month of June. Rains across India were below par with the country recording 11 percent deficiency. However, Monsoon rains were above normal for several major cities in India last month. In fact, few of these cities even recorded double the amount of rains.

Let’s take a look at the weather conditions across major cities in India during the month of June

Delhi: The onset of Southwest Monsoon over Delhi was slightly delayed. Monsoon has arrived over Delhi on July 2. June has not fared well for the national capital. While weather conditions remained hot and humid throughout the month, rains were also almost absent from Delhi.

While the monthly normal for Delhi stands at 82.4 mm, the city could only receive 33.5 mm of rain. However, with the onset of Monsoon over the national capital and good rains being recorded during the first two days of July, conditions look good for Delhi in July.

Mumbai: Southwest Monsoon was delayed over Mumbai by a good ten days. While Monsoon makes an onset over Mumbai on June 10, this year, Monsoon arrived on June 20. However, rains did pick up pace and the city managed to receive heavy rains during the last ten days of the month.

Mumbai recorded 695.4 mm rain in June against its monthly average of 523.1 mm. Now, rains are expected to increase in July so Mumbaikars can expect more rains during this month as well.

Kolkata: Monsoon rains in Kolkata were below normal in June. Weather conditions mostly remained humid. Temperatures were also on the higher side. The City of Joy recorded half the amount of rain than it usually does in June.

Kolkata received a mere 132 mm of rain against its monthly average of 283.5 mm. July is expected to be slightly rainy, however, it is still too early to say whether Kolkata will be able to surpass its monthly rains.

Chennai: Southwest Monsoon does not give much rain over the capital city of Tamil Nadu. In fact, Chennai is a rain shadow area and the city records heavy rains only during the Northeast Monsoon season.

However, this June, good rains have occurred over Chennai. The city recorded double the amount of its monthly rains. Against the monthly average of a mere 55.9 mm, Chennai received 113.2 mm.

Bangalore: During the month of April and May, Bangalore was reeling under hot weather conditions. However, the city did receive some good pre-Monsoon rains. In fact, even after the onset of Monsoon, Bangalore did receive some good rains.

Thus, during the month of June Bangalore recorded 192.1 mm of rain against its monthly average of 89.1 mm. July is expected to be pleasant and more rains are likely to occur over the silicon city.
