Dharamsala breaks eighteen years old record after observing a whopping 292 mm of rains in the span of 24 hours. In fact, the figure is 40 mm more than its previous record. Monsoon rains have been occurring over the hill spot for the last many days with intensity being sharper in the last 24 hours.
Prior to this, the last extremely heavy rains, Dharamsala has recorded was on August 13 when the city recorded 143 mm of rains. In the entire month of August, there have been three occasions when the city has observed three-digit rains, beginning on August 7. Apart from these occasions, the rains have also remained heavy.
In fact, until now, in the month, there have been just four occasions wherein the city has remained completely dry. Otherwise, on and off rains have been making its occurrence.
Counting on the last rains, the city has recorded a total of 1164 mm of rains, against its monthly mean of 864 mm, thereby surpassing the monthly average by a good difference. The reason for these rains as per Skymet Weather can be associated with the western arm of the Axis of Monsoon trough.
As the trough would continue to persist, Dharamsala and parts of Himachal Pradesh may brace for some more moderate to heavy rains to continue for the next 24 hours. Thereafter, rains would reduce and would be more over Uttarakhand as the western end of the Axis of Monsoon trough is likely to shift slightly south.
These heavy rains may even trigger landslide and flash floods. One odd incident of cloudburst cannot be ruled out as well. Hence caution is advisable.
