Despite good showers, Chennai likely to stare at deficit rainfall in December

DESPITE GOOD SHOWERS, CHENNAI LIKELY TO STARE AT DEFICIT RAINFALL IN DECEMBERThe year 2014 is coming to an end. It also means that Northeast Monsoon is also about to end. However, as it bids adieu to Peninsular India, it is expected to leave a trail of deficit rainfall in Chennai. In last 10 years, the highest rainfall deficiency of 96% in December was observed in 2004 when Chennai received rainfall of only 6.8 mm as against the monthly average of 191.1 mm.

It’s been almost a month after which Chennai received a spell of good showers in last 24 hours. The city which is popularly called as the Gateway to South India received 35 mm of rain in last 24 hours. The spell of good showers, 77 mm, was last witnessed on 13th November.

However, According to Skymet Meteorology division in India, this spell of rainfall or the subsequent rainfall is not likely to bring Chennai any closer to its monthly average. Till date, Chennai has received 42 mm of rain against the monthly average of 191.1 mm.

Performance of NE Monsoon in last two months

Northeast Monsoon had commenced on a good note as Chennai received record-breaking rainfall of 161.9 mm in a 24-hour span on 18th October. Due to this spell, Chennai managed to surpass its monthly average rainfall of 278.8 mm with the actual rainfall of 342 mm.

Though, Northeast Monsoon weakened thereafter leaving Chennai to cope with a deficit rainfall of 57% in November. The city received rainfall of just 175 mm as against the monthly average of 407.4 mm.
