Despite excess rains, Punjab and Haryana await for arrival of Monsoon

Monsoon has not yet reached Haryana and Punjab but the month of June has turned out to be very good in terms of rainfall.  As on June 29, Punjab is rain surplus by 146%, and Haryana has witnessed excess rains of 167%.

Now conditions are becoming favorable for the onset of monsoon over these states in the next 48 hours. The rains which are going on can be termed as the fusion of pre-monsoon and Monsoon. A cyclonic circulation is presently over Northeast Rajasthan and adjoining areas. A fresh Western Disturbance is approaching Jammu and Kashmir.

Due to these weather systems, we expect good rains to continue over Punjab and many parts of Haryana for the next few days. In the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Thursday 59 mm rain was recorded over Karnal, Hissar 36.3 mm, and Narnaul 19.26 mm of rain in Haryana.

In Punjab, Ludhiana witnessed 32.6mm of rain, Pathankot 20 mm, Patiala 14.4 mm. while, Amritsar, Anandpur Sahib, Bhatinda, Chandigarh recorded light rainfall.

Temperatures across the states will remain in lower 30’s and the sky is likely to remain cloudy overcast with occasional clearance in the afternoon hours.

These showers have restored the soil moisture and will immensely benefit the farmers. Sowing of Kharif crop can also be done timely due to these heavy rains. June has ended on a good note and the month of July will also have a great start with the onset of Monsoon.
