The depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal (BoB) moved west-northwest and crossed the Tamil Nadu coast in the wee hours today. The system has weakened rapidly and is expected to become rather mild to trigger any further adverse activity over the state. The state had earlier witnessed intense weather activity, under the influence of cyclonic circulation in the close proximity of the coastline. However, the depression somehow was inconsequential in terms of adverse weather conditions and spared the state, in toto.

The capital city of Chennai recorded just 3mm of rainfall at Nungambakkam and a mere sprinkle of 0.2mm at Meenambakkam, in the last 24 hours. The worst is over and only light weather activity is expected over the state for the next one week or so.

There is a cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea, off Coastal Karnataka and Goa, extending up to the middle levels.  An east-west trough joining this feature and the remnant of the depression from Tamil Nadu is running across South Interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema, North Tamil Nadu & Coastal Andhra Pradesh. The system in the Arabian Sea will move westward, further away from the coast. The weather activity over the South Peninsula will still be controlled by these features before it shrinks and fade away after about a week.

A fresh weather system is likely to emerge in the East-Central Bay of Bengal and North Andaman Sea on 19th/20th October. It will be too early to talk about its future course. But, the intensity, track and timelines will decide the next round of weather activity for the state of Tamil Nadu. Most such systems take a recourse towards Odisha, West Bengal and Bangladesh. In this scenario, the monsoon activity takes a pause for the state of Tamil Nadu, which lasts for about 4-5 days.
