Pre-Monsoon rains in Kerala to take a short break

Kerala has been witnessing light to moderate rains from the last three days. However, these rains have mainly affected the southern portion of the state while the north coastal stations of Kerala had remained mainly dry.

On and off showers have been battering the so-called ‘God's own country’, Kerala since November 19 with the intensity picking up the pace between November 20 and 21.

The last 24 hours saw a major drop in the rainfall activity across the state, however, light rainy traces were still observed over the state. Within the span of 24 hours from 08:30 am as on Tuesday, Thiruvananthapuram recorded 0.3 mm of rains while both Kochi, Punalur observed some rainy traces.

As per Skymet Weather, the reason for these rains can be attributed to the low-pressure area which is over Southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast. Now, this system has intensified into a Depression and lies over Southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast. This system is likely to move in a west-northwest direction and is likely to cross Sri Lanka coast and may intensify into a Deep Depression in the next 24 hours.

On account of its intensification, rain is likely to intensify over Kerala in the next 24 hours. These rains will mainly affect the southern districts of the state. Thus, the regions of South Kerala are expected to receive moderate with a few heavy spells for the next 24 hours.

The districts such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Punalur, and Ernakulam may witness moderate to heavy showers.

On the other hand, the districts of North Kerala are likely to record mainly light rains with the possibility of few moderate showers.
