Depression over West Bengal turns into deep depression, likely to weaken soon

Yesterday, the well marked low pressure area over Northwest Bay of Bengal and Gangetic West Bengal has intensified into a depression. This weather system is now lying close to Gangetic West Bengal near Canning and is expected to move in a westerly direction.

During the next 24 hours fairly widespread rainfall is expected over all the districts of South West Bengal with heavy to very heavy spells over few places. Even parts of North Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh will also witness some heavy spells. The gusty winds are expected to reach up to a speed of 40 kmph to 60 kmph that will prevail over the region for the next 24-48 hours.

In the last 24 hours significant rainfall has been observed over all the areas of coastal Gangetic plains of West Bengal. In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Digha recorded 35.3 mm of rain, Midnapore 6.6 mm, Asansol 24.6 mm, Kolkata 57.8 mm and Bankura 18.6 mm.

As on August 9, Gangetic West Bengal has received  deficit rainfall rainfall by 5%. In the last 24 hours the region has recorded 11.4 mm of rain against the normal average of 8.6 mm. In the next 48 hours, it is expected that the areas will receive good amount of rainfall which would help the figures turn to positive.
