During the past 24 hours, Kolkata has observed light rains to the tune of 6 mm. These rains can be attributed to the deep depression over northwest and adjoining west central Bay of Bengal off South Odisha Coast.

Amid the next 24 to 30 hours, the sky would remain overcast over the city of Joy, Kolkata. Rain and thundershowers of moderate to heavy intensity are likely to batter the city and the suburbs as the system in Bay will move closer to the coast and is most likely to cross West Bengal coast.
These rains will be intermittent in nature and accompanied by squally winds of 40-50 kmph gusting up to 60 kmph.

Afterward, the rain intensity is expected to reduce as the system in Bay is anticipated to weaken. For now, the days will be pleasant and humid with maximums settling around 20°C.
Other than the capital, the deep depression will also affect other districts of Gangetic West Bengal such as East Midnapore, West Midnapore, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Digha, Bankura, Bardhaman, Nadia, Birbhum and Haldia. These areas are expected to witness rains of moderate to heavy intensity.
As of December 9, the city has recorded 6 mm of rains as against its monthly average rainfall figure of 3.2 mm. So this is pretty much evident that in wake of the active weather system in Bay, Kolkata has managed to surpass its average rainfall mean of the month.
During the month of December, if and when the city of Kolkata witnesses rain and thundershower activities it could be credited to either the oceanic systems that forms in the Bay or the winter systems that approach the Himalayas.
