According to Skymet Weather, the system is now travelling inland. Thus, due to the lack of moisture feed, it will weaken speedily into a depression and later into a low pressure area by today evening.

However, the system will continue to give moderate to heavy rains over parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand and eastern parts of Bihar during the next 24 hours. Thereafter, moderate rains will continue over Bihar and Jharkhand but it will decrease substantially over Gangetic West Bengal.

Kolkata would settle with light to moderate showers only. Cities such as Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Bhagalpur, Gaya and Patna are likely to see moderate to heavy showers.

The system has already lashed West Bengal with heavy to extremely heavy rains on Monday. Meanwhile rest parts of East India also saw light to moderate rains and thundershowers.

Updated on October 9, 2017 11:30 AM (IST): Depression in Bay of Bengal intensifies into deep depression, heavy rains to drench East India

After sustaining strength of a depression for a very brief period, the weather system has now intensified into a deep depression over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining North Bay of Bengal. According to Skymet Weather, the system is presently centered at Latitude 22°N and Longitude 87°E, close to Kolkata and is moving at a speed of 14 kmph.

As per weathermen, deep depression would continue to travel in northwest direction gradually. However, we need to wait and watch whether it will get more marked or not.

A cyclonic circulation had been brewing in Bay of Bengal for last few days, before finally churning into a low pressure area on Sunday. Thereafter, it turned into a well-marked low pressure area during the early morning hours of Monday, which quickly turned into a depression around 11 am.

With this weather system approaching, several parts of East India are likely to see good rain and thundershowers. Its peripherals had already given moderate to heavy showers over Gangetic West Bengal and parts of Odisha during the last 24 hours.

In fact, for next 24 hours, moderate to heavy rains are likely to continue over Gangetic West Bengal and North Odisha. Rains are also likely to drench Kolkata during this period.

Sea conditions have also become rough to very rough along and off the coast of Odisha, West Bengal and Bangladesh. Fishermen and locals are advised not to venture out in the sea during the next 24 hours.

Subsequently, with system shifting northwestwards, the intensity of rains will increase over parts of Jharkhand but the rains will gradually reduce over Gangetic West Bengal.

However, as the moisture feed from Bay of Bengal will reduce due to system’s inland movement, it is likely to degenerate rapidly. Hence, we do not expect extremely heavy rains over Jharkhand and Interior Odisha but few heavy spells cannot be ruled out.

Its effect will also be seen over northern parts of Chhattisgarh as well as over East Madhya Pradesh. Intensity of rains would be moderate over parts of Chhattisgarh but Madhya Pradesh will settle with light to moderate rains only.

According to Skymet Weather, by the time, weather system will reach Jharkhand and nearby areas, it will start weakening. With this, intensity of rains will reduce over most of the areas, especially over Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata.
